Town dragged back in early table-toppers showdown

Gareth Thomas - late goal for Tow n

Binfield 2 Thatcham Town 1

THATCHAM were replaced at the top of the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division table on Monday night when two Liam Ferdinand goals gave Binfield victory in their first versus second clash.

But it is very much early days yet in the table, Binfield and Town having played more games than any of their cup-involved rivals, who have up to four games in hand.

It was an early scene-setter however, and drew a 200-plus crowd to Hill Farm Lane and Binfield might have a had an early goal when Chris Rackley saved from Ferdinand after four minutes before Thatcham forced a string of corners but found no finish.

Binfield opened the scoring five minutes before the break from the penalty spot when Gareth Thomas brought down Liam Scope from behind and Ferdinand scored form 12 yards and it was the same player who rounded off a neat build-up between Scope and Jake White to beat Rackley.

Thatcham could not hit back until four minutes from time when Thomas netted from close range, and time ran out on the night, although there are more than seven months to go before the table really matters.
