THE trial of a former Thatcham schoolteacher accused of sexually abusing boys in his care has collapsed.

Jurors at the trial of 62-year-old Robert Alan Neill of Park Lane, Thatcham, had been expecting to hear a fourth day of evidence on Thursday morning.

But instead they were told by Judge Angela Morris that a serious situation had arisen which meant the trial could not continue and that they were therefore discharged.

Mr Neill had denied three counts of indecent assault and two of indecency with a child between 1986 and 1995 when he worked as a teacher at Kennet School in Thatcham.

A new trial is expected to be arranged for next year and a pre-trial review has been scheduled for December 16.
