The Hampshire Deli and Farm Shop in Wolverton near Newbury will only stock British cheeses this Christmas

An award-winning delicatessen will only be stocking British cheeses this Christmas in a bid to support British farmers and cheese producers.

The Hampshire Deli and Farm Shop at Wolverton Park, just off the A339, is a business passionate about British products and it has been championing UK cheese makers over the past few years.

The deli has its own cheese counter and it boasts one of the largest selections of British cheeses in Hampshire, with over 65 varieties in stock.

Hampshire Deli owner Barry Walker, who runs the business with his wife Justine, said: “We started this business during Covid and were selling all cheeses including those from Europe.

“Then we realised we produce over 1,200 different types of cheese in the UK and now second and third generation producers are making their own cheese styles here from their homelands of France, Spain, Italy and other European countries.

“We started to sell only cheeses made in the British Isles, and our customers appreciated this wanting to support British artisan cheese makers.

“In fact, whatever the style of continental cheese the customer wants we can find a similar product made here in the UK, and can get it, with a little bit of notice.”

Mr Walker said that UK cheese makers are now making more varieties than the French and in international circles they are being regarded as the best in the world.

The deli’s cheese counter has a core list of products that always remain in stock, but Mr Walker is also constantly on the hunt for exciting new additions.

Apart from their cheese offering, the deli makes its own award-winning pies, sausage rolls, quiches and home cooked hams, which also feature on the menu of its coffee shop.
