THATCHAM's family fun day is well under way.

Despite the poor weather families have been flocking to the Henwick Worthy Sports Ground for the town's largest event of the year.

The children's fun races, sponsored by The Newbury Weekly News, have now finished but they're bound to have plenty of energy left for the activities going on throughout the day.

The race around the field was won by 14-year-old Louise Atkins, from Thatcham.

The Trinity schoolgirl, who runs Parkrun every week, said that the run had been really good. As for the day itself miss Atkins said: "I think it's really good but I think the weather has spoilt it a bit though."

Another young runner enjoying the day is Olivia Pyke, aged five.

Her mother, Jay, said: "It's a shame it's raining but it's a really good day and I like catching up with lots of Thatcham people that I know."

The mayor of Thatcham, Sheila Ellison, opened the event and encouraged people to come along as there are lots of activities taking place today.

Still to come is the parade of classic cars at around 2pm, the dog show and tug of war.

Newburytoday will be here throughout the day and there will be extensive coverage in Thursday's Newbury Weekly News.
