10 per cent of Newbury cricketing auction to be donated to charity founded by former England cricket captain Sir Andrew Strauss in memory of his late wife

Following our report on the upcoming ‘cricketing’ sale at Newbury auctioneers Dreweatts that includes a striking early 19th-century English School watercolour depicting a cricket match at Sandleford Priory – now St Gabriel’s School – in Newbury, we can confirm that a portion of the proceeds of the sale will be going to the Ruth Strauss Foundation, particularly apt given the sale’s cricketing credentials.

The evocative painting, expected to fetch £800-£1,200, forms part of The Art of Cricket: The Mark Loveday Collection, an auction taking place on Tuesday (August 19).

The sale celebrates the visual heritage of cricket through one of the world’s finest private collections of watercolours, prints, and portraits relating to the sport – many dating back to the late 18th century – assembled by the late Mark Loveday.

Dreweatts have announced that 10 per cent of the sale total will be donated to the Ruth Strauss Foundation.

The charity was founded by former England cricket captain Sir Andrew Strauss, in memory of his late wife Ruth Strauss who was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer that affects non-smokers.

The charity raises valuable funds to provide emotional support to families facing incurable cancer diagnosis as well as funding awareness and research into non-smoking lung cancers.
