A treat for 16-year-old Estella as Newbury Choral Society hand her the baton to conduct closing carol

A lovely gesture by conductor Joe Tobin at Newbury Choral Society’s Christmas Carol Concert at the weekend as he invited 16-year-old Estella Kotz to take over the podium, Dad Adam Kotz explains: “She and was watching her mum Helen in the concert. She stood on the podium during the interval, telling me she wanted to ‘conject’, and Joe, the conductor, noticed and kindly invited her to join him for the last carol.

“It took some courage for her to stand there in front of the choir and a full church, but as the piece went on, and with Joe gently encouraging her, she got through it, even keeping time in her own way!

“It was a lovely, and unexpected, treat for us and I think many others who were there. All very inclusive and Christmassy!”

NEWBURY Choral Society’s Christmas Carol Concert was a night filled with festive cheer.

As conductor Jo Tobin and the choir processed in wearing black and red, the audience settled into their seats for what promised to be a magical evening.

The concert opened with a solo rendition of Once in Royal David’s City by soprano Laura Martin, one of two choral scholars now singing with NCS. Verses two onwards were sung by the choir and audience which immediately drew everyone into the spirit of the season.

The concert featured a rich selection of traditional and well-loved carols, both sung a cappella and accompanied by the church organ, expertly played by Steve Bowey.

The voices of the choir, harmonious and powerful, resonated throughout the hall, filling every corner with warmth. The choir's balance and blend were impeccable, a testament to their dedication and rigorous rehearsals.

One of the evening's highlights was a solo by alto Jess Norton Raybould who gave a haunting performance of The Three Kings that was clearly appreciated by the audience. The concert also featured several lesser-known carols, which provided a refreshing contrast to the more familiar pieces.

Lo! He Comes With Clouds Descending was particularly memorable, showcasing the choir’s versatility and ability to handle complex arrangements.

Audience participation was encouraged, with everyone invited to join in singing Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and While Shepherds Watched.

The sound of hundreds of voices coming together in song was truly heartwarming and exemplified the communal spirit of the season.

The evening concluded with conductor Joe Tobin unexpectedly inviting 16-year-old Estella Kotz, who has autism and learning difficulties and was watching her mum perform, to conduct the choir singing O Come all ye Faithful, which she did with much enthusiasm, to the delight of both choir and audience, leaving everyone in high spirits.

The mayor thanked the choral society for supporting the West Berks Foodbank whose representatives were present to answer questions and receive donations, making it a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit while contributing to the community.

Newbury Choral Society once again delivered a performance that not only showcased their exceptional talent but also captured the essence of Christmas, making it an unforgettable experience for all.

Their next concert will be on Saturday, April 12, at St Nicolas Church, where the choir will perform Elgar’s famous choral work The Dream of Gerontius.
