Pimm’s, strawberries and a serenade by Newbury’s ‘accidental choir’
IN the summer of 2005, local social worker and keen singer Sarah Ballard was asked to help organise a charity concert at St John’s Church.
Sarah asked St George’s then church choir leader, Helen Tuck, if she could get together a few volunteers from the various choirs she sang with to form a ‘one off’ choral group for the occasion.
The singers enjoyed singing together to such an extent that they formed the Harmony Choir, and have been singing their diverse repertoire in Newbury and further afield (being keen travellers) ever since.
A few years later, helping at St George’s mother and toddler group, Helen met young mum and violinist Helen Page, who mentioned that she hoped soon to return to performing.
She was immediately asked if she would consider taking part in Harmony’s annual summer concert at St George’s and kindly agreed, even waiving fees so proceeds could go to the work of the church.
This kindness has continued ever since, and for this year’s 20th summer concert, Harmony once more welcome long-standing guest stars Helen Page and Oliver Williams.
Summer Seranade will take place at St George’s Church, Wash Common, at 3pm on Sunday, July 13, with Helen Page, Oliver Williams and Harmony.
Interval Pimm’s and strawberries.
Tickets £10 on door, cash only or from the church office, 10am to 3pm, Tuesday to Friday.
