Newbury's 17-piece Apollo goes big with Gershwin, Mancini and Irving Berlin
The local Apollo Big Band returns to Newbury’s Corn Exchange for its annual show on Saturday, October 1 (7.45pm).
Having celebrated its 21st birthday this year, this fantastic 17-piece jazz orchestra will entertain with hits from the great big-band leaders like Ellington, Basie, Kenton and contemporary leaders like Gordon Goodwin.
You can look forwards to songs by the best composers, such as Gershwin, Mancini and Irving Berlin.
This show will feature rising star Ellan Mangham. Singer Ellan will wow you with her individual interpretation of hits by Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, Adele, Shirly Bassey and many more.
The line-up of The Apollo Big Band has remained consistent in recent years and they have worked together to maintain a superb standard of performance and musicianship.
Expect some stunning solos from leader Les Bruce (alto sax), Trevor Hayward (tenor sax), Diane Prince (trombone) and more.
The band will support a new talent in Ellan Mangham whose debut performance with the band earlier this year was hailed in reviews with epithets such as “mature panache” and “note-perfect voice”.
N2’s review described her as a “hot new talent”. Read it at https://bit.ly/3qWn9pQ
Ellan, who studied at three highly-respected stage schools in London and earned a BA in musical theatre, knows how to own the stage when performing her songs. She can use her amazing voice to entertain with high powered musical theatre numbers like Maybe This Time and can switch smoothly to low-key numbers like Summertime.
The band promises that this will be a great evening of music and songs.
