Newbury arts society celebrate 50 years of inspiring lectures
Art lovers celebrated a Golden Jubilee of lectures on subjects as varied as the tombs of Ancient Egypt, the street art of the 21st century, and everything in between.
The Art Society Newbury recently marked 50 years since its inaugural lecture with one on a remarkable woman designer of the interwar years… and cake.
Society chair Kate Harwood said: “This is a very special day as we celebrate 50 years since the founding of the Arts Society Newbury in September 1974 by Evelyn Smith and a group of friends.
“The Society is proud of our contributions to the community. Since 1985 our Church Recording Group have painstakingly detailed the contents of churches at Enborne, Yattendon, Stanford Dingley, and Highclere. Currently they are working on St Mary’s, Speen. We have made numerous grants to schools and also to Mencap in Newbury to encourage creativity and interaction with the arts.”
