Book early for Berkshire bestselling authors Robert Harris, Max Hastings & The Countess of Carnarvon

The Hungerford Bookshop handily has a bunch of bestselling writers within its vicinity - and this autumn three of them bring out new books.

Tickets are selling very quickly to hear Robert Harris – the author of 14 bestsellers including V2 & Munich – talk about his new historical thriller Act of Oblivion (published September 1) to award-winning historian Jessie Childs on the day before its official release, on August 31, at Herongate Club, Hungerford. Act of Oblivion is the compelling story of the biggest manhunt of the 17th century and will no doubt hold readers in its thrall.

On October 6, leading military historian Sir Max Hastings talks about his new book at the Herongate. This year Hastings turns his attention to the Cuban Missile Crisis in Abyss. At the time of writing the book he had little idea how topical the subject would be at the time of publication. Hastings argues that we may be witnessing the onset of a new Cold War between nuclear-armed superpowers and that to contend with today's threat, which he fears will prove enduring, it is critical to understand how, 60 years ago, the world survived its last glimpse into the abyss.

October 27 draws further back in time, to 1922 when George Herbert, whose country house Highclere Castle is today known as the set of Downton Abbey (just over the Berkshire border), helped fund and engineer the excavations of the tomb of Tutankhamun. In dramatic detail The Earl and the Pharaoh reveals the true story behind the thrilling discoveries made in Egypt - as well as those twists of luck and tragedies that shaped Herbert's life. You can book to hear the Countess of Carnarvon talk at the Croft Hall, Hungerford, about this fascinating event, when a new door to the ancient past was opened.
