Newbury Youth Theatre casting call for Edinburgh Fringe Festival
NEWBURY’S Newbury Youth Theatre company are looking for 20 young people, aged 14-19 to tour a new production to the Edinburgh Fringe in August.
The nationally renowned local company have enjoyed incredible success at the Fringe over the years, regularly receiving four and five star reviews in the festival press, winning a loyal following, as well as awards. They have done so on merit, competing with over 3,000 other companies daily for audiences and media coverage.
The Fringe is regarded as the largest of its kind in the world, presenting theatre, dance, comedy, music and circus of every style and genre. Over its 75-year history it has established itself as a hotbed of innovation, drawing performers and professionals across global creative industries.
Established in 1989 at the Arts Workshop, Newbury Youth Theatre has enjoyed residencies at the Corn Exchange, New Greenham Arts and Arlington Arts over the years. The new year sees the company on the move once more, as they return to the town centre, meeting on Wednesday evenings (from January 15, 7-9pm) at ACE Space in St Nicholas Road.
“This year is something of a unique opportunity,” says director Tony Trigwell-Jones, “as we are looking forward to creating a whole new company for this production.”
Director Amy Trigwell-Jones continues: “We have a short list of ideas that we want to explore, so we will start with a period of development this half term, and see what takes shape.
“Our 2025 production is likely to be accessible for family audiences, with many of our trademark features, such as strong ensemble work, playfulness, music and storytelling.”
“We have been incredibly fortunate to maintain such a high standard of work for so many years,” reflects founder and producer Robin Strapp. “We have always maintained that the creative process is a collaborative one, giving agency to our young company, as we work on each new project. I believe that this is central to our success, as we continue to develop and embrace generational shifts in perspective, while nurturing talent.”
Having taken groups to Edinburgh for more than 25 years, the NYT team are highly experienced in facilitating young people’s creativity, to make work of a professional quality.
