Newbury's Cecilia salutes Uncle Sam

Janet Coxwell and The Cecilia Consort have had a busy start to 2022. They recently spent a week rehearsing and recording their 30th anniversary CD album at St Martin’s Church in East Woodhay, under the watchful eyes - and ears - of renowned countertenor and producer Patrick Craig and Newbury-born sound engineer Dominic Rae. The CD will be available later this year, from the choir’s website and also at their live performances.

Janet, who is head of Vocal Studies at Cheam School, as well as being a highly respected soprano soloist and former member of The Tallis Scholars, said: “Having reached our 30th anniversary, I have found myself reflecting on all the music we’ve performed during that time so this year, I’ve delved into our archives to produce an exciting programme of American music for our March concert.

"We’ll sing works by Muhly, Lauridsen and Whitacre, as well as the very beautiful, ethereal choral version of the Barber Adagio and Herbert Howells’s haunting Take Him Earth For Cherishing, composed for the memorial service of John F. Kennedy.

"Something for everyone to enjoy.”

The concert will take place at St John’s Church, Newbury, on Saturday, March 5, at 7.30pm and, as ever, the choir is delighted that their very talented accompanist and organist Steve Bowey will be joining them once again.

Tickets are now available and can be booked online at www.ceciliaconsort.org.uk or by calling 07775 743445. Adults - £15, under 18s - £5.
