Dance video co-created with diverse group, some with no contemporary dance experience, all ageing strong, even into their 80s
NOCTURN’s latest project, From Here Forward, is a multi-generational dance video that explores the tension between a youthful inner self and an ageing body.
Created during a two-day summer intensive with adult community dancers, the film honours the diverse ideas and personal expressions about ageing.
Artistic director John Darvell shared his excitement about the project: “It was a joy to co-create with such a diverse group, some with no contemporary dance experience, all ageing strong, even into their 80s.
“They arrived as strangers and left as friends.
“For 17 years, co-creation with communities has been core to our work.
“As an older dancer myself, it’s fitting to showcase the amazing creativity in those of us over 50.”
Participant Chris Stannard praised the workshop, saying: “This wonderful workshop allowed me to surpass my creative limits.
“John inspired us to draw on life experiences to create movement and expression, with fun and laughter along the way.”
Supporter Lia Curtis added: “Being surrounded by people of all ages was a great escape from the ordinary world, allowing us to move and express freely.”
The project is part of Corn Exchange’s Ageing Creatively programme.
Learning and participation manager Helen Bonner is a great supporter of the project: “We were really keen to work with NOCTURN on this project as it’s a wonderful way to explore movement and film with intergenerational members of our community.
“We have a longstanding relationship with John and NOCTURN and know that his work is always engaging, thought-provoking and definitely always fun!”
