Dementia-friendly screenings at the Corn Exchange Newbury cinema

The Corn Exchange are running a programme of monthly dementia friendly screenings in their independent 40-seater cinema, currently programmed until March 2023.

These special screenings are for anyone who might benefit from a more relaxed cinema experience and designed to meet the needs of people living with dementia, along with their families and carers.

The lights in the cinema are left on low during the film and the sound volume and intensity is reduced to make it a more comfortable experience.

Audiences can feel free to move around the space throughout or sing along to any musical numbers and there is a short comfort break in the middle of the film for those who might need it.

The dementia-friendly programme features a range of classic films, from musicals to Western and seasonal favourites.

This autumn, audiences can see the 1950s Wild West musical Calamity Jane (September 5), romantic comedy High Society (October 3) starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra, and childhood favourite, The Wizard of Oz (November 7); in December audiences can enjoy much-loved Christmas classics, such as White Christmas (December 5) and an additional Monday screening for It’s a Wonderful Life on December 19.

In the new year, see Fred Astaire star in The Band Wagon (January 16), and an original boy-meets-girl film, An American in Paris (February 5), and on March 6 be wooed by the voice of Frank Sinatra in On The Town.

The Corn Exchange cinema is located on the top floor of the Corn Exchange in Newbury’s Market Place and can be accessed via the lift or the stairs. As with all of their cinema screenings, the Corn Exchange’s Café & Bar is open before and after the film, serving a selection of hot and cold beverages as well as theatre ice creams that can be taken into the cinema to enjoy during the film.

Dementia Friendly Screenings take place on Mondays each month in the Corn Exchange Cinema. Tickets cost £5.55 (plus booking fee).
