How to get a head start in clay sculpture with Newbury ceramicist Rebecca Maynard
HERE’S a great opportunity to try your hand at clay sculpture with a five-week course at City Arts in Hampton Road.
Ceramics expert Rebecca Maynard will be guiding participants through the two-hour evening sessions focusing on sculpting a head from clay using a variety of handbuilding and sculpting techniques. Participants will work from reference material, pictures and clay model examples.
The first few sessions will concentrate on form and proportion, followed by time to consider pose, movement and expression to give the head sculpture real character and emotion. Your final work will then be fired in Rebecca’s kiln.
This may all look challenging to newcomers but Rebecca is keen to point out that she has helped many students that had no experience with clay to produce work they were proud of.
“As this course is spread over five sessions, if you haven’t tried a class yet it is ideal as you can work at your own pace,” says Rebecca.
“It is also suitable for those who want to develop their clay skills further over a number of weeks with my support.”
Rebecca is a local clay sculpture artist and experienced tutor who has run workshops at City Arts for a number of years. Her bold ceramic sculptures have been exhibited at the V&A and she currently sells her work through London and Scottish galleries. She exhibits at The Base Greenham and City Arts as part of Open Studios each May.
The course runs from February 27 to March 27 (6.30pm-8.30pm).
