Giant colour-changing musical Lips visit Newbury this Saturday

This is fun! For just one day The Lips by Puppets with Guts – giant puppets in the form of colour-changing musical lips – will be lip-syncing their way into Newbury town centre for three singalong spectacles on Saturday (April 23), thanks to Newbury BID and the Corn Exchange 101 Outdoor Arts.

The Lips are a mix of art and theatre, produced and directed by the creative puppet companyPuppets with Guts. Performances reanimate and celebrate songs from popular music culture, like It’s Raining Men, I’m So Excited, Single Ladies and Spice Up Your Life through a magical mixtape of lip-syncing.

Head of 101 & Outdoor Programmes Danielle Corbishley said: "At the Corn Exchange, we absolutely love putting on shows in Newbury's public spaces. Over the last 10 years, in partnership with Greenham Trust, we have been able to develop an outdoor programme for Newbury that has brought some of the world's best acrobats, puppeteers and performers to our beloved town centre."

Originally from Bristol and regulars at Brighton Pride and Pop-Up London Festival, demand for the bold and gutsy puppet company has taken them all over the world. Performing at public events, shows, and concerts, the puppets are no strangers to the film, theatre or TV industry

Stand-out performances include the 2012 Olympics, a concert for Sir Paul McCartney, the theatre adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's ‘War Horse’, and the Harry Potter film series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Newbury Business Improvement District (BID) is encouraging visitors to take advantage of this great opportunity to see The Lips in action for free in the town centre making the most of the spring sun and enjoying food and drink from our independent cafes, pubs and restaurants

Performances of ‘The Lips’ are at 2pm, 4pm, and 9.15pm, courtesy of a new partnership with town centre organisations, Newbury BID, the not-for-profit organisation behind the Visit Newbury brand and 101 Outdoor Arts.

Newbury BID operations manager Alison Drummond said: “We are extremely fortunate to secure these spectacular displays of giant musical puppetry for Newbury and are grateful to be working with 101 Outdoor Arts, part of the Corn Exchange, to deliver a day of performances for all to enjoy in the town centre.

"We hope that visitors and local residents make a day of seeing the shows here in Newbury by taking advantage of the fabulous independent businesses, both hospitality and retail, we have on offer!”
