Have you room for a rockstar? The award-winning Watermill would love to hear from you

Have you room for a rockstar?

Our wonderful Watermill is calling for help from people living within driving distance from Bagnor.

The theatre is on the hunt for local hosts to accommodate an actor or creative team member in their spare room or annexe, to help bring its epic production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s extraordinary rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar to life this summer.

The Watermill accommodates many of its freelance staff onsite but regularly works with local hosts who house members of staff at certain times of the year when space onsite is limited.

With a larger than usual cast and creative team due to work on Jesus Christ Superstar, they are now looking to expand the existing group of hosts.

The show will run from June 24 – September 21, and hosts will need to have full or partial availability between the beginning of June and the end of September and should live within driving distance (maximum 30 minutes drive time) of Bagnor.

There will be a fee offered.

With Jesus Christ Superstar set to spill out of the theatre into the gardens, be ready to be immersed into the heart of this epic musical, with an incredible cast of actor-musicians seamlessly fusing these classic roles with iconic music.

Executive director and joint CEO Claire Murray said: “Every summer we are so grateful to our wonderful local communities who give our performers such a warm welcome and a comfortable stay during their time at the Watermill.

“We would love to expand our network of hosts in the local area and do hope that anyone with a spare room or annexe will consider joining this vital part of the Watermill family.

“Hosting a cast or creative team member is a brilliant way to support the arts locally – and to play your own role in bringing this spectacular production to life.”

A BIT ABOUT THE WATERMILL

The Watermill Theatre is a unique producing powerhouse of residential and artistic facilities which provide a crucible for creativity, innovative storytelling, and artistic excellence. The Watermill’s mission is to make theatre that is surprising, inventive, and exciting and to enable access for everyone. A hallmark of its work is the artistry of actor-musicianship, in both new writing and reinvigorated classics. The theatre nurtures and celebrates talent and creativity in its company, community, and in the wider sector and it holds wellbeing, equity, and sustainability at the heart of its culture.

In 2024, the Watermill was awarded the prestigious title of ‘Theatre of the Year’ jointly with the National Theatre. This award, recognising excellence in British theatre, was bestowed on the Watermill Theatre for its continued ambition as an independent charity, and the success of their 2023 production of The Lord of the Rings. This multi award-winning production, the Watermill’s most ambitious to date, has subsequently transferred to Chicago, Auckland, and Australia (tour) before it returns to the UK in October 2025.

Reaching far beyond the 200 seats in its auditorium, the Watermill’s productions regularly transfer to the West End or tour the UK and internationally, including Calamity Jane, Spike, Bleak Expectations, Amelie the Musical, Tell Me on a Sunday, and Crazy for You.

With a core belief in the transformative power of the arts, the Watermill also runs a comprehensive outreach programme, working with children and young people, those from low- income backgrounds, and isolated or displaced communities.
