Multi-award-winning equine photographer Karen Bennett recently hosted her first solo exhibition of fine art pieces entitled Equine Envy.

More than 300 people jumped at the chance to visit her exclusive exhibition, with attendees from the world of horse racing, equine enthusiasts and animal loving locals.

Equine Envy was held at Wormstall House, Wickham, for the weekend of November 25 and 26.

“An incredible exhibition, a stunning tribute to the horse,” said another guest.

Former National Hunt champion jockey, trainer, broadcaster and author John Francome, from Lambourn, said it was the best photography exhibition he had ever been to and went on to say: “Karen has a special talent for capturing horses as they are.”

The showcase exhibition the following day continued in the same vein: “A treat to see these majestic creatures up close,” said visitor Michelle Power.

Another said: “A timeless, intelligent and natural look at the equine world – and a godsend to the interior designer.”

It soon became clear that visitors were not only horse lovers, but those who appreciated fine art, suitable for hanging in any stylish home.

Each photograph, whether a limited edition or open edition print, displays Karen’s patience and understanding of the horse in its environment.

Taking the time to earn trust and respect between the subject and the photographer enables Karen to capture the horse’s raw power, tenderness and beauty.

Favouring the drama of an overcast or windy day, Karen takes her time to capture her image in their place of happiness, be that in the field or while they work.

A former amateur jockey, Karen has always been drawn to the romance of horses. Swapping her saddle for her camera allows Karen to preserve this strong relationship and remain close to her first love. She creates each photograph as a story, allowing for communication to build between the image and the viewer.

Such is the importance of creating this connection, Karen says: "If the image doesn’t speak to me I won’t use it – no matter how good it is."
