Last week I saw the final performance of WBBS’ production of Matilda at the Bucklebury Memorial Hall. And what an amazing show it was.

The atmosphere was set from the start. On arrival, we ordered interval drinks from a menu with intriguing names like Bogtrotter Brew and Revolting Red (beer and wine, it turned out!), and settled into our seats in a hall effectively transformed into a colourful classroom. There were cleverly versatile alphabet blocks, silhouettes of Matilda, and cautionary notes not to upset Miss Trunchbull – as if anyone would dare!!

With inspired direction and choreography from Claire Bowden, the cast of 25 students of various ages gave a truly polished performance, all focused on their roles and full of joy and enthusiasm. It’s hard to single out individual performances, but some deserve a special mention.

Thea Netton-Gibson as Matilda played her part with pathos, charm and ‘a little bit naughty’, showing particular skill in her rendition of Quiet.

Lily Clark as Mrs Wormwood and Princess, performed with sass and confidence, with superb Latin dancing and high kicks.

Poppy Franklin-Wilson as Mr Wormwood provided a convincing self-assured wide boy, only showing his softer side towards Matilda at the end of the show.

Piper Vat, as the doctor and other roles, showed excellent clear speech and a range of emotions; while Lauren Bailey as Bruce and Rudolpho moved around the stage with balletic ease.

Rosa Gemmell was well cast as Miss Trunchbull, the wicked bully, and contrasted effectively with Anthanasia Papadopoulou as Miss Honey.

All the cast should be proud of an excellent production, a thoroughly entertaining evening for an appreciative audience, and with some definite stars in the making.

Well done!
