Something rather magical happens when the family goes to the theatre together. Finding entertainment that engages everyone, young and old, can be tricky, but The Corn Exchange has lots to offer. Give it a go…
WHETHER you’re enchanted by much-loved storybook characters, captivated by live music or inspired by the wonders of nature, you’ll find a vibrant spring season of shows on our doorstep - at our very own Corn Exchange.
The magic began on Sunday when our little ones enjoyed The Littlest Yak, a heart-warming musical adaptation of the award-winning children’s book. They followed Gertie, the curly-coated Littlest Yak, in a tale brimming with beautiful puppetry and uplifting songs.
At half-term (Saturday, February 15), the Knightmare Live 10th Anniversary Tour drops by for older children of 10-plus. The smash-hit comedy show is inspired by the iconic 90s TV cult classic, packed with perilous puzzles, bloodthirsty goblins and laugh-out-loud moments.
Nature takes centre stage in Four Seasons (Friday, February 21 – Sun 23 ), an enchanting ode to the natural world from Olivier Award-winning Little Bulb Theatre. This visually stunning production celebrates the wonders of flora and fauna through puppetry, physical theatre and a score inspired by the changing seasons, including a fresh take on Vivaldi’s timeless masterpiece.
There is also a special free storytime event at Newbury library on Thursday, (February 6) at 11am.
Gandini Juggling take you into a world where magic and juggling intertwine, blurring the lines between reality and illusion. They bring their new show Heka (Tuesday, February 25) to town in an incredible performance where objects materialise, vanish, levitate and transform before your very eyes.
For music lovers, Newbury favourite Nick Cope brings his whimsical charm to the stage once again with his brand-new show I’ve Lost My Bobble Hat (Sunday, March 2). Known for his hit show Popcast on CBeebies, Nick will perform his infectious, family-friendly songs in a live show that will get you singing and laughing together.
For a fun musical experience for all ages TRASH! (Wednesday, March 5) offers a high-voltage percussion and comic performance with more hi-vis than bin day. The four creative workers/performers will use all kinds of waste, from umbrellas to bin bags, to create a slapstick percussion piece full of wit and humour to charm families and get them tapping along.
Meanwhile, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s cherished tales come to life in two spectacular productions. First, The Gruffalo (Friday March 7 to Sunday 9) – join Mouse on a daring adventure in the deep, dark wood, with catchy tunes, clever storytelling and a touch of magic.
You might like to hop aboard for Room on the Broom (Thursday, April 10 to Sunday 13 ), a spellbinding adaptation of the much-loved story about a witch and her misfit companions. Pre-show workshops for both productions engage children in creative crafts that add to their theatre experience.
Prepare for a “sensory extravaganza” for the tiniest theatregoers - aged two months to two years - with Whipped Up! (Sunday, April 6 ). Set in a 1950s-style diner, this playful comedy follows Dottie, a hapless server navigating the adorable chaos of babies as her demanding customers. With sensory play woven into the show, it’s a delight for little ones and their grown-ups alike.
Illustrator Nick Sharratt – known for his collaborations with Jacqueline Wilson, Jeremy Strong, Julia Donaldson and Michael Rosen – invites budding artists to pick up their pencils for a lively Picture Book Drawalong (Tuesday, April 15). This interactive session offers a glimpse into his creative process, tips on drawing favourite characters like Tracy Beaker and the chance to invent your own creations. Signed books will be available.
Curiosity takes the spotlight in The Science Museum Live Stage Show (Wednesday, April 16), a dynamic, interactive performance designed to ignite young imaginations. Packed with mind-blowing demonstrations, this educational adventure promises to entertain and inspire the whole family.
And for a poptastic twist, Pop Princesses (Saturday, April 19) brings together fairytale royalty and chart-topping hits in a high-energy concert. With songs by Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, and more, this glittering event is just the thing for mini music fans.
Rounding out the season is Michael Morpurgo’s Farm Boy (Tuesday, April 22), a touching sequel to War Horse. Combining drama, storytelling and live music, this moving production captures the changing face of rural England and the enduring power of family stories.
