Myths, magic and mystery, Cheryl Gould’s sculpture in the park

Not long now until the popular summer open air sculpture park pops up in the lovely grounds of historic Shaw House.

Last year, ‘Altered States’ attracted 14,000 visitors.

This year it will show 75 sculptures by 23 sculptors: a walk in the park for curator Jim Crockatt! Scroll down for our chat with Jim.

To give you a taste of what to look for, we are picking out some ‘sculpture shorts’ in the run up to the show.

The first is Cheryl Gould.

MYTHS, magic and mystery, all things theatrical, with movement, music and dance are recurring themes in Cheryl Gould’s works.

Medieval jesters often feature in her work. They are threaded to her belief that comedy and tragedy can become unified. The Jester is simultaneously a fool and a sage.

A Harrow School of Art and Kingston Polytechnic graduate in fine art/sculpture, she has exhibited widely, gaining a silver trophy for sculpture at the 1st Malta Biennale.

Cheryl gains inspiration from the human figure, which is integral to her work and is passionate about life drawings; they become inspirations for her sculpture.

You can see her work among this year’s open-air Altered States – 75 sculptures by 23 sculptors – exhibiting their work from August 3 to September 29 in the grounds at Shaw House.

Her work features in private and public collections and she is an elected member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. She works in her garden studio with a variety of materials, and sizes of her sculptures vary from handheld to lifesize.

Among her commissions is a cold cast aluminum five-foot Holocaust Memorial.

Illustrated work may not be the actual work on show.
