'I must be crazy' Newbury photographer takes on the Ridgeway 40
Newbury photographer David Hatfull is one of about 200 walkers/runners taking part in the Ridgeway 40 tomorrow (Saturday).
The Ridgeway 40 is an organised walk that takes place each year, the challenge being to walk 40 miles from Avebury to Goring, along the country’s ‘oldest road’ in a single day.
Mr Hatfull does a lot of walking, but says he has never done 40 miles in one day. “Im sure some folk think I must be crazy !”
He will start from Avebury at 8am and finish the youth hostel in Streatley. “I’m hoping to complete before it gets dark, probably around 9pm.”
.Mr Hatfull is walking in memory of a friend, and is also looking for support for the fundraiser to help those in urgent need in Ukraine and neighbouring countries.
He said; “The ancient route has been travelled for thousands of years, no doubt by many people fleeing conflict, which is especially poignant these days. as a result, I'm walking not only to honour the memory of my good friend Andy , but also to support the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
“Heavy fighting, shelling and air strikes across Ukraine have had devastating consequences. Already, over two million people, mostly women, children and the elderly, have fled their homes to escape the intense conflict, leaving behind loved ones, losing livelihoods and belongings. All are in need of shelter, food, and water; essential services like healthcare have been hit; temperatures have dropped below zero."
