Newbury’s Nomads return to stage with 80s musical based on Adam Sandler movie

Local group Nomads Musical Theatre finally return to the Corn Exchange stage this week after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Newbury-based theatre group will be performing the musical comedy The Wedding Singer from Wednesday.

Based on the hit Adam Sandler movie, the show takes you back to 1985 when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer was the coolest guy in the room.

With an almost 30-strong cast of local talent and a 12-piece live band, theatre goers are in for a fun, energetic and toe-tapping evening straight out of the 1980s.

Nomads’ chairman Richard George said: “We are so excited to be back at the Corn Exchange for the first time since our production of Made In Dagenham in 2019. It has been a long time coming and we feel very grateful to be able to share what we love doing with an audience again.”

The group were about to kick off their next show in March 2020 when the pandemic hit and had to reschedule twice due to the changing restrictions and uncertainty around live theatre.

Director Jamie Ledwith said: “I’ve been so lucky to have had a cast that have worked hard, been open-minded and had enough of a sense of humour to put up with my suggestions, and in turn add their own ideas into their characters.

"Having lost the opportunity over the last few years, come and enjoy the fact we can all be together.

"Have fun as an audience member as we have fun on stage, lose yourselves in the experience for a couple of hours and allow yourselves to be transported back in time to the mid 80s!”
