Northcroft lido opens for new season for outdoor swimming and splash pad and slide fun
Northcroft lido opens for the new season today (Wednesday).
Swimmers can now take to the water at the popular 50m Newbury outdoor pool.
The iconic 150-year-old outdoor facility, which is run by Everyone Active in partnership with West Berkshire Council, was given a £5m revamp in 2023.
The heated, Olympic-length pool has proved popular for its outdoor lane swimming, while the interactive splash pad and 6-metre spiral flume is a hit with children when the weather heats up.
Nigel Foot (Lib Dem, Newbury Clay Hill), West Berkshire Council’s executive member for leisure, said: “It’s great to see the lido open ready to welcome swimmers for the summer season.
“We know people have a fantastic time when they visit and we look forward to welcoming everyone again this year.”
The refurbishment work at the lido now means that less confident swimmers can enjoy the benefits of the water, with the 0.9m pool depth at the shallow end.
The reduced water volume has also led to a lower energy requirement to heat the pool, reducing the Northcroft’s carbon footprint.
The lido was first built as an unheated pool in 1870, before being extended in 1914.
It was completely rebuilt in 1937, at which point it was believed to be the largest pool in the south of England.
Richard May, contract manager at Everyone Active, said: “We are excited to welcome the community back to Northcroft Lido for the new season.
“With a host of fun activities for all ages, interests and abilities, we welcome people from West Berkshire and beyond to come and enjoy the brilliant facility that has a wonderful history.
“We hope all of our customers enjoy staying active in the water over the warmer months.”
The lido will remain open until the end of September and will host a number of events throughout the season.
Spaces are limited at the lido so booking is advised.
