Remember the Moog? Musicians from Portishead, Florence and the Machine and composer Graham Fitkin bring classics back in all their glory
If you’ve a soft spot for the Moog, you can return to the retro-futurist world of fizzing, funky synths at a special concert - with only three performances in the country - at The Anvil , Basingstoke.
On Wednesday, October 9, (8pm) Will Gregory’s Moog Ensemble and the Britten Sinfonia bring classic tracks and soundtracks back in all their glory with lovingly restored analogue synthesisers (nothing else sounds the same), from the original Dr Who theme to Wendy Carlos' Switched-On Bach, and Vangelis’ Chariots of Fire theme to the score of Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.
Groundbreaking orchestra the Britten Sinfonia bring their own skills to the mix, including music by the permanently unconventional Charles Ives, while Will Gregory celebrates in music the genius of Archimedes with 'stand-up mathematician' and YouTube sensation Matt Parker.
Gregory’s 10-piece Moog Ensemble features illustrious musicians from Portishead, Florence and the Machine, and composer Graham Fitkin – each bringing their distinctive musicianship to the retro-futurist world of fizzing, funky synths.
The concert’s first half focuses on synthy, sci-fi movie soundtracks while in the second half hear the premiere of Will Gregory’s suite for synths and orchestra, inspired by the theorems of the ancient Greek mathematician and physicist Archimedes. Alongside the work, there will be fascinating insights into the connections between maths and music.
Like nothing else you will see or hear this year, and with only three performances in the country, don’t miss this chance to see a truly memorable performance.
