Dirty Dusting by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood is a hilarious comedy about three septuagenarian cleaners, Elsie, Gladys and Olive played by Crissy Rock, Vanessa Karon and Leah Bell, who also directs.
They have known each other since they were youngsters in the Girl Guides and are great friends.
However their vindictive boss, Dave (Paul Dunn) is desperate to get rid of the “Jurassic Park shift” and is about to issue them with their P45s, as he wants to employ a younger team.
When they receive a chance wrong phone number from a caller who thinks he is calling a sex line the entrepreneur cleaners decide to spend their last weekend in a new career in the telephone sex business.
What follows is a riotous romp as the characters relish their new personas as the ‘Telephone Belles’ and realise that they will probably earn more money in the weekend than they would have done in months.
The script is full of double entendres, is rude and crude but had the audience laughing out loud from the beginning to the end.
Gladys, is an amateur dramatic fanatic but is a little reluctant to join in but once she dons a costume she becomes a sexy star.
However she does admit to finding it difficult to keep the romance alive with her husband Billy, especially with their teeth out.
The ex-Girl Guide leader manages to bring the Guiding law into the conversations and reminisces about her camping trips and a certain liaison with a Scoutmaster.
As they gain in confidence and the sex line gets busier the jokes come fast and furious and the situations more farcical.
On discovering that they can get free flavoured condoms from the machine in the gents’ toilet they remark “sucking on a sherbet lemon used to be an innocent pastime.”
And as to crotchless panties, and that vacuum cleaner and accessories that Dave takes to his office… that needs to be left to your imagination!
It is all side splitting fun, delivered with perfect comic timing from a talented cast.
