Children’s sci-fi author shortlisted for major award offers free creative writing workshops to 50 primary schools

Local children's author Larry Hayes has been shortlisted for one of the biggest awards in children's books for his comedy sci-fi: How to Survive Time Travel.

Past winners of the Scholastic Laugh Out Loud Book Awards include David Walliams, David Baddiel and Liz Pichon's Tom Gates.

To celebrate, Larry is offering 50 free Creative Writing Workshops for local primary schools from now until the end of October.

“We had 50 sessions last year in West Berks, Reading, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire and I can’t wait to do it again,” he says.

“The experience was inspiring, and the children’s imaginations and creativity were off the charts.”

Larry’s Creative Writing Workshop is a ‘Live Action’ Choose-Your-Own-Adventure where the children get to make all the decisions. And it never fails to get the whole class engaged and involved in creating - and acting out - a unique new story.

The workshop is for 30 to 60 children at a time and is perfect for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. The session takes 50-60 minutes and he can do two or three sessions while he’s at your school.

Hungerford Bookshop’s Emma Milne-White said: Larry really ‘gets’ children. His books, full of wild and silly adventures, appeal to their imaginations and sense of humour. The way he encourages kids to create their own stories is fabulous to see.

“Engaging, enthusiastic and funny - his school workshops and bookshop signings have been wonderful.”
