Share your passion with The Arts Society Newbury

Are you interested in the Arts? Join the Arts Society Newbury with other like-minded enthusiasts who share a passion for the arts in their broadest sense.

Membership includes 10 lectures a year, held at the Arlington Arts, the purpose-built theatre at Mary Hare School.

Here are some of the forthcoming year’s highlights.

This winter the Tate Modern is hosting a major exhibition of the works of the great post-impressionist painter Cézanne. To tie in with this the February lecture is ‘Cezanne: The (Unlikely) Father of Modern Art’, offering members an in-depth look at this celebrated artist’s work.

In the past members who have attended lectures and then visited related exhibitions have commented on how the lecture gives extra insight.

Many of the historic places the society visits are opened exclusively for its members.

One of its visits this year will be to Forde Abbey, home to the stunning Mortlake tapestries woven from the celebrated Raphael cartoons. The Raphael cartoons at the V&A have recently undergone extensive cleaning and careful restoration.

Are you interested in photography? A Special Interest Day this autumn features the work of photographers Herbert Ponting and Frank Hurley and watercolourist Edward Wilson.

They all accompanied Ernest Shackleton on his heroic excursions to the North and South Poles on the ill-fated Endurance.

The Society also carries out heritage work, supporting Young Arts in the community, recently funding a local primary school’s ‘Wellbeing Day’ where children created a graffiti project.

For more information go to www.theartssocietynewbury.org.uk You will find the full programme, as well as membership application forms. Membership is £50 per person or £95 for two people living at the same address.
