It's 1940s Week at Milestones Museum.

This half term, Milestones Museum in Basingstoke is inviting visitors to take a step back in time to the 1940s with fun activities for all ages.

During the week, Ministry of Food demonstrations showing how to make the most of rationed items – including tastings for the brave - and demonstrations on how to mend and make do in 1942 will be taking place daily. From Tuesday to Thursday, visitors should be on the lookout for Johnny Wheeler Dodgy Dealer trying to sell his contraband goods of nylons and chocolates on the museum’s streets.

Visitors are encouraged to come dressed in 1940s costume, but for those who just want to dabble in themed dress, there is the opportunity to dress up as a Second World War soldier.

The museum will also be getting in the spirit of the Platinum Jubilee with a jubilee trail for younger visitors around the museum’s decorated, cobbled streets. Visitors can enjoy a new, mini pop-up exhibition and learn about this year’s Platinum Jubilee, past jubilees and Coronation celebrations as well as the Queen’s role during the Second World War, complete with archive footage.

Over the final weekend (Saturday, June 4 and Sunday 5), there will be live music on the museum’s bandstand or a sing along in its very own pub, the Baverstock Arms, accompanied by the resident pub pianist.

In addition to the demonstrations and activities, visitors can stop for a bite to eat in the Rooftops Café with Second World War-themed food including corned beef hash and spam fritters on the menu.

Visitors born in the 1940s will receive free entry to Milestones during 1940s Week, terms and conditions apply.
