As Acker Bilk said: ‘Stand by your bed with your boots in your hand – this is going to be special’

THE date Tuesday, September 3 - at Theale Village Hall, where the regular jazz sessions takes place every month with Graeme Hewitt and his High Society Jazz Band - is going to be special, says the veteran jazzman himself. Joining Graeme will be “the incredible Ben Cummings on trumpet”.

“Ben not only bears a strange resemblance to Kenny Ball,” says Graeme, “but for three years while Ken was in need of a bit of back-up, due to health issues, Ben supported him and his band during that time and acquired much of the Ball repertoire – which he brings to Theale. His last visit ended with a standing ovation, such was his contribution.

“This next visit has an even greater attraction in that Ben is accompanied by his wife – Lizzie Newberry, herself a great entertainer, and the session is due to be a sell out.”

The hall is in Englefield Road, Theale RG7 5AS, and the gig starts at 12 noon, admission just £10 and guests are encouraged to bring snacks and liquid refreshment as there is no bar.

And the final word to Graeme: “As a great friend, Acker Bilk would say ‘Stand by your bed with your boots in your hand – this is going to be special’.
