75 puppets star alongside Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Very Hungry Caterpillar at the Corn Exchange on Saturday, October 15 and Saturday, October 16. Review by ROBIN STRAPP
What a delight to see the Corn Exchange buzzing with so many happy toddlers and youngsters with their families for The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, based on Eric Carle’s books.
For many it may have been their first experience of live theatre and what a treat was in store as Jonathan Rockefeller’s colourful characters were brought to life, much to the joy of the youngsters.
David Goldstein’s simple set held many surprises as doors and windows were opened to reveal the puppets in these magical stories.
The highly-skilled actor/puppeteers, dressed in white dungarees, were charming storytellers, quickly establishing a warm rapport with the kids, who were happy to join in with the fun.
There were screams of delight when the large brown bear appeared, followed by a whole menagerie of animals including a red bird, blue horse, green frog and many more. The cast asked the audience “what do you see?” as each new animal was revealed and the youngsters were happy to oblige with the name of the animals.
The story of “the 10 rubber ducks” who find themselves on a storm engulfed cargo ship created the opportunity to explore the world of the sea and its inhabitants, with dolphins, seals, polar bears and a gigantic whale.
We met “the very lonely firefly” who had lost its way and was desperately trying to find its friends and their light, but is distracted by humans and their electric lights, torches and a spectacular fireworks display that confuses the poor firefly - who eventually finds its friends.
Finally, we have the story of “the hungry caterpillar” who each day eats its way through leaves, fruit, cakes and pizza, but ends up with a stomach ache. The children were mesmerised by its antics and greed and enthusiastically joined in the fun shouting out encouragement.
When the caterpillar had finished eating it settled in its cocoon, only to emerge magnificently as the most beautiful colourful butterfly that filled the entire stage.
The 75 impressive puppets were undoubtedly the stars in this delightful ingenious child-friendly show.
