Take a listen to Granny’s Attic - you won’t want to miss them when they come to Newbury
The month of May is much beloved and sung about in the folk tradition of the British Isles, says Stephen Ottner. It therefore seems appropriate that the Ace Space gig on Saturday, May 17 will be with one of the foremost and acclaimed folk trios, Granny’s Attic.
Described by Folk Radio as “one of the most exciting and accomplished English folk acts on the scene right now”, this outstanding trio can hold audiences in the palm of their hand. The trio have been heralded for their lively performances and skilled delivery of traditional material, playing with verve, energy and their own inimitable style. Though grounded in tradition, they are keen to push new boundaries by exploring fresh approaches and writing their own compositions.
As school friends Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne (melodeon, anglo concertina, vocals), George Sansome (guitar, vocals) and Lewis Wood (violin, vocals) formed Granny’s Attic in 2009 whilse attending the Bishop Perowne Performing Arts College. Four years later they were nominated for the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2014 and were still teenagers. Since then, they have honed their skills touring the UK and Europe and are firm favourites at folk festivals.
Granny’s Attic new album ‘Cold Blows The Wind’ will be the released the day before their ACE Space gig. This will be their first studio release as a band in almost 4 years. It was produced by Pete Ord who is no stranger to ACE Space having been sound engineer for The Willows and A Winter’s Union gigs. Pete is also the technical lead at LiveToYourLivingRoom who specialise in streaming live music from musicians homes and occasionally ACE Space gigs.
