The Father offers an honest, insightful portrayal of one man’s experience with dementia and its impact on those around him

Wallingford’s Sinodun Players present Florian Zeller's award-winning play The Father next week.

This translation by Christopher Hampton is a powerful and moving exploration of dementia and its ripple effects. It runs from Tuesday (October 14) to Saturday at the Corn Exchange, in Wallingford town centre.

A compelling production, it offers an honest, insightful portrayal of one man’s experience with dementia - and the impact it has on those around him.

Told through the eyes of André, The Father invites audiences to see the world as he does: fragmented, shifting, unclear and deeply human.

Reality bends and perspectives blur in this poignant, often humorous story that captures both the confusion and the resilience of a man determined to make sense of his changing world.

“Our aim with this production is to spark conversation, deepen understanding, and connect with audiences on a personal level,” say the players.

“Dementia affects so many families and theatre has a unique power to help us empathise, reflect, and discuss.”

Each 90-minute performance will be followed by a talkback session with dementia specialists, offering a rare opportunity for audiences to reflect, ask questions, and gain insights from dementia care professionals.

With its blend of warmth, wit, and emotional honesty, The Father is a cleverly-constructed play that lingers long after the final curtain - a reminder of how fragile, yet profoundly human, memory and identity can be.

The Sinodun Players are owners, managers and operators of the 176 seat Corn Exchange in Wallingford. The theatre was created by members from the derelict shell of a Grade II Listed Building.

The theatre is maintained and operated through the voluntary efforts of members and friends bringing theatrical productions and cinema to the historic town of Wallingford.

The Sinodun Players perform at least four plays annually and a pantomime in January as well as an annual Drama Festival competition for local amateur drama groups.
