Edgy Swedish ‘Nordicana’ sisters Baskery head back to Newbury

This has caused a stir… The edgy Swedish Americana sisters Baskery are heading back to town.

The high-energy trio are on tour again, with 26 gigs across five European countries, including eight in the UK - and one of those limited number of dates is at ACE Space, the community venue in St Nicholas Road, on Saturday, November 9.

Having appeared at BunkFest last year and this, Cropredy this year and ACE Space last November it was anticipated that there would be a big ticket demand for their return to Newbury and, in fact, the gig sold out a few weeks ago.

Baskery comprises the three Bondesson sisters, Greta (banjo, drums, guitar, harmonica), Stella (upright bass) and Sunniva (guitars), originally from Stockholm, but now scattered across England, Germany and Sweden.

Baskery is all about turning the music on its head, blending edgy blues riffs with sugar-laced harmonies over folk and country grooves.

The band are fans of Neil Young and will be releasing an album of their take on his songs on November 20. The songs were recorded on a single day, live to tape at Middle Fam Studios in rural Devon. This is the same studio that Police Dog Hogan, popular at both ACE Space and Arlington Arts, recorded their newly released album Lightening Strike.

Since forming in 2007 as an offshoot of The Slaptones, who featured their father Janåke Bondesson on drums, Baskery have toured extensively across Europe and the US.

In 2014 they moved to Nashville, signed with the mainstream label Warner Brothers and moved to Los Angeles.

This was when ACE Space had just started putting on regular monthly gigs and they tried to book them, but were just too late. So, it is particularly appropriate that the trio are back to celebrate a decade of monthly gigs at ACE Space.

Opening the evening is someone who also played Cropredy and winner of 2019 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, Maddie Morris.

Maddie is an artist who strives to make a difference in the world. Bold, insightful and refreshingly unique, she takes traditional song in new directions to shine a light on contemporary issues, offering new perspectives about the world we live in today.
