West End performer turned singing coach celebrates 20 years of giving people a voice
Ex-West End performer and teacher at some of the country’s leading drama schools Jamie Read is celebrating 20 years of coaching singers in Thatcham.
Jamie, who has appeared on stage with the likes of Judi Dench and Brian Blessed started offering one-to-one singing lessons back in September 2005 after returning from an international tour.
And from humble beginnings of working with a handful of local singers has gone on to support hundreds of clients including recording artists, award-winning West End performers and TV celebrities.
“I never imagined when I started out that I would have well-known performers travelling from London out to little old Thatcham to come and work with me!” says Jamie, who has taught at the world-famous Italia Conti school boasting alumni such as Strictly’s Layton Williams and West End star Sam Tutty.
“The last 20 years have given me the chance to help hundreds and hundreds of people own their voice, which is a joy and a privilege.
“That moment when someone sings a note they didn’t think they could, or steps into their power and lets go of the inhibitions and fear that are holding them back… it’s just magic, every time.”
Jamie’s private studio is now based in Thatcham’s historic Old Bluecoat School which, he says, is a wonderful setting to sing in. As well as coaching the stars and singing alongside some of London’s leading lights, Jamie runs a Musical Theatre Choir (from the Frank Hutchings Hall and last year conducting the choir for several dates on Gareth Malone’s UK tour.
