Open mic night

IT’s the first Unplugged open mic night of the season tomorrow (Friday) at ACE Space in St Nicholas Road, Newbury. Hosted by actor, musician and ACE Space chairman Adam Kotz, it showcases fine music, poetry and comedy and the occasional uncategorisable act. All styles, all ages, all levels of experience receive a warm welcome from the audience. If you love what you do, they probably will too. Acts register on the door at 7pm and each gets a minimum of two songs or equivalent. There is a PA system for vocals and ambient micing of acoustic instruments, and DI’s for guitars if required, plus a house Yamaha keyboard available to use. The doors and bar are also open from 7pm and acts take to the stage around 7.30pm. Curfew is at 11pm and organisers try and fit in all who want to play. Tickets: £5 entrance – pay on the door. Performers free.

Book talk at vineyard

Join Hungerford Bookshop team with a glass of sparkling wine in your hand in the beautiful barn at Winding Wood Vineyard, tomorrow (Friday, 7pm ) as independent wine producer Christopher Cooke talks to wine expert Polly Gibson about his journey of creating a vineyard in West Berkshire. In his book Ancient Land, Pastures New, Christopher Cooke offers a monthly account of the trials and tribulations he and his partner experience planting a boutique vineyard from scratch on ancient pasture; the ups and downs of nurturing its development over 10 years; the descriptions of the passing seasons in the vineyard as they grapple with a chaotic climate; and the huge pleasures provided by the helpers, friends and charming visitors who come to visit or lend a hand. And, not forgetting, of course, the joys of producing English sparkling wine in a cool climate. Told in a light style with wry humour, the book could be seen as a cross between a vigneron’s alternative to A Year in Provence and a vine-hikers A-Z guide to planting in England. After the talk Christopher will be happy to answer questions and sign copies of the book. Your ticket includes a glass of sparkling wine.

Festival of Arts and Crafts

There’s a colourful celebration of all things arts and crafts at The Base Greenham’s Festival of Arts and Crafts, running from Saturday to Saturday, September 21. In its third year, this popular celebration highlights creativity through arts, crafts, artisan food and drink from local makers and creators. To kick off the celebrations, this weekend The Base building will be surrounded by a captivating Arts & Craft Fair (Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8, only), featuring stalls that will create a bustling market of high-quality crafters and artists for visitors to browse. There will be live music from local performers for visitors to enjoy while browsing the stalls, sponsored by Honesty Bakers and Makers.

The Base will also be offering creative Taster Workshops throughout the festival, including versions of some of The Base’s most popular workshops and courses such as Drawing with Wire, Silkscreen Printing, Urban Sketching and Pottery Throwing. Taster workshops will give children and adults a chance to experience a variety of crafts first-hand, capturing their imagination and encouraging their creativity in new ways, some of which they may not have been able to explore before. There will also be a Festival of Art Exhibition, featuring local artists’ work in the venue’s Gallery through the festival , offering visitors the chance to purchase a piece of original art.
