My Wild Life photography competition is back at The Base, Greenham

The Base at Greenham has launched their popular My Wild Life photography competition, inspired by the return of the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year 58 to their Gallery in February/March 2023.

Once more Newbury Weekly News photographer Phil Cannings and arts editor Trish Lee will join the judging panel.

Now in its 4th year, photographers of all ages and expertise are invited to enter – whether it’s capturing an image of insects in their back garden, wildlife discovered on a family walk or snaps of a beloved pet, The Base are looking for creative thinking when it comes to capturing the wonders of wildlife that surrounds us in town and country.

Two winning photographers will have a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at Beale Wildlife Park in Lower Basildon.

Alongside a keeper for the day, the winners will get to meet the animals and take photographs not achievable from behind the fence. They will also win a Base Pass/Family Base Pass annual ticket, which gives them unlimited entry to The Base Gallery for a whole year, along with seeing their photographs displayed in The Base Runway Gallery and Beale Park, and printed in the Newbury Weekly News.

The Base want to showcase the best local talent that celebrates our wildlife and the natural world and so the winning entries, along with second place, finalists and highly commended entries, will be displayed in Runway Gallery for all to see and admire.

Gallery manager at The Base Stephanie Johnson said: ‘This is the fourth year we have run this competition and we’re thrilled to bring Beale Wildlife Park on board to provide such an incredible first prize. The skill we’ve seen demonstrated by local young people and adults is incredible and utterly inspiring. In fact, visitors to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition in previous years have often commented that our competition finalists’ entries would not look out of place in the prestigious exhibition – and we couldn’t agree more.’

Entries must explore or capture the theme of ‘My Wild Life’ and deadline for submissions is Sunday, December 18 at 5pm. Finalists from the two age categories (Under-18s and Over-18s) will be chosen by a panel of expert judges and the winning entries from each category will be chosen by the general public in an online vote on The Base’s Facebook page starting on Thursday, January 12.
