AROUND 100 people made the most of the sunny weather to walk to the Roman villa site near Boxford on Sunday and catch up on the findings of a local archeology project.

The Boxford History Project has been investigating three closely-linked Roman sites for the last three years and was recently awarded £62,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the project. The group held the open day for local people to see what had been uncovered.

Project chairwoman Joy Appleton said: “We would like to thank all the volunteer diggers/find processors – some 48 of them, the other archeological groups who supplied equipment, the farm manager and our digger driver Bruce and the next door neighbour who provided extra parking.

“Everybody helped to make the experience not only one of the most productive but very enjoyable.”

The site has now been closed down and a second site near Boxford will be excavated next year.
