200-year-old Hungerford lock to be replaced today (Monday)

A 200-year-old lock is being replaced in Hungerford today (Monday) as part of British Waterway's winter refurbishment project.

A crane will lift the three tonne, hand-crafted oak lock gate into position at Hungerford Marsh Lock.

British Waterways staff have already been at the site for a week, removing the old lock gates and preparing for the new arrival.

Each lock gate costs £10,000, which does not include labour costs, and the work is expected to take another three weeks to complete.

Work to install new locks at Wire Lock, which lies between Hungerford and Kintbury, and Monkey Marsh Lock in Thatcham is also expected to begin this week.

The work is due to take four weeks to complete at each site.

Construction supervisor for British Waterways, Nick Lewis, speaking from Hungerford Marsh Lock this morning, said: “We're replacing two sets of lock gates at Hungerford today and we will also be undertaking some masonry work as well.

“We're lowering one of the bottom gates into place now. We'll see whether it fits properly, if it doesn't we'll take it out, make adjusts and try again. It's like installing a new door at home.

“From tomorrow we'll have scaffold up and we'll be undertaking some masonry work.”
