The Met Office said a “band of squally, thundery rain is like to push quickly east across the warning area through Tuesday morning”.

The warning said there could be some loss of power due to the storms, with strong and gusty winds also likely.

Delays and cancellations to train and bus services are possible, while driving conditions will be affected by standing water and spray.

The warning added: “Sudden, torrential downpours will bring 15-20 mm of rain in a short period of time.

“Showers will likely be accompanied by thunder and lightning. Gusts of winds to 40-50 mph are also likely, as is hail.”
