A body found in the Kennet and Avon Canal has been identified




The man seen in the canal near Bone Lane, Newbury on Wednesday (June 15) was from Andover

The body of a man discovered in the Kennet and Avon Canal on Wednesday has been identified as Godfrey Smith.

Mr Smith, aged 82, was from Over Wallop, near Andover, Hampshire.

Police were called to a section of the canal near Bone Lane, Newbury, at about 1.30pm on Wednesday.

A cordon of 100 metres was put in place east of the footbridge by Greenham Mill.

A water rescue unit from Caversham Road, Reading, and one crew from Dee Road fire station, Reading, were also in attendance.

Paramedics attended the incident but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
