A chance to look inside Donnington Castle

One of West Berkshire's most historical sites is to open up for visitors next month

DONNINGTON Castle in Newbury will open its gatehouse for history enthusiasts next month (July) to celebrate the 2011 Festival of British Archaeology.

On Saturday 16 and Sunday 17, West Berkshire Heritage service will be offering tours to a limited number of people for this unique opportunity.

The 14th century castle is one of the most historical sites in West Berkshire and played a key role in the Civil War, and the tour will show the extensive star shaped earthworks constructed to fortify the site during the Civil War.

The gatehouse is all that remains today so tours will include the ground and first floor, which will be opened for the occasion by English Heritage.

The tour will explore the castles origins, appearance and inhabitants as well as revealing the truth about local myths assosciated with the castle.

Led by archaeology staff, the tours will last approximately one hour with four tours held per day.

Tours are not suitable for under sevens and tickets must be booked in advance.
