A place to remember Tom

Seventeen-year-old Tom Slater, of Benham Hill, died in May, after a road crash in Newbury. He had been riding a Yamaha motorcycle on the A339 between the Robin Hood and Vodafone roundabouts when it was involved in a collision with a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tom, a former pupil of Trinity School, Shaw, and Whitelands Park Primary School, Thatcham, was half way through the first year of a three-year mechanic apprenticeship scheme.
He had been working at Pro Bike, Newbury with his father, Paul Slater (known locally as Curly), as well as being on block placement at Suzuki in Doncaster.
Paul Slater said that they had the bench installed both to thank people who have raised money and to give them a place to remember Tom.
He said: “People always rally around at times like this. It’s amazing.
“The bench is unusual because it’s made of stone but it looks wooden.
“We wanted something out of the ordinary because that’s what he was.”
He went on to thank those who helped with the installation, including Thatcham Town Council, Henwick joint management committee, Stuart Luker of Ashmore Services and all those who raised funds, especially family friend Tim Drummond, who raised a lot of money at a charity football match.
The vice chairman of Henwick joint management committee, Keith Woodhams, said that the committee was honoured to receive the request for the bench in memory of Tom.
He said: “The whole community can now share in this moving and lasting tribute to Tom.”
