Cubs help in packing of the NWN Over 80's Parcel Fund goodies

The Newbury Weekly News Over 80s parcels are now packed and on their way out.

It started last Sunday at 9.30am, when more than 40 ‘Christmas Elves’ – wearing Cub uniforms – arrived at Sainsbury’s to help with the packing of the food parcels.

Together with so many kind Sainsbury’s staff and other volunteers who all gave up their Sunday morning to help, the Cubs packed more than 1,750 food parcels for us to give to our elderly recipients in West Berkshire.

The parcels are a way of thanking them for all they have done during their lifetime and something that the Newbury Weekly News has been doing now since 1897.

Our thanks go to Carol Irwin, the PR Ambassador at Sainsbury’s, plus many others who very kindly gave up some of their spare time to do all the packing this year.

The very helpful Cubs came from 1st Newbury, 2nd Newbury, 3rd Newbury, both Dolman and Chandos, and 1st Woolton Hill, and they packed so quickly and efficiently the job was complete in just over two hours.

The 1,750 parcels packed were stored at Sainsbury’s for nearly a week before being distributed, this weekend.

We had an army of volunteers ready and waiting to distribute them around Newbury, Thatcham and Hungerford and many of the local villages.

Our thanks also go to Keith Durham from Guardsman Industries in Didcot, who has very kindly donated two bottles of hand sanitiser for each of our elderly recipients.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the very kind people and companies there are out there in West Berkshire who make the Parcel Fund, which is supported by Greenham Trust, possible.

A special thanks this week also go to Thatcham Parochial Charities for donating £3,000 to the Parcel Fund this year, a very welcome cheque, as are all donations.

If you are expecting a parcel this year, keep your eyes open as the distribution is taking place this weekend and the main reason we do this is to say a very big thank you to our valued elderly members who have done so much for us and their community during their lifetimes.
