A339 reinstated to four lanes as improvement works continue
Drivers urged to take care
THERE was relief for motorists this week as the A339 was reinstated back to four lanes following the completion of the first phase of roadworks.
Work to remove the central reservation was completed earlier on Tuesday night. Traffic is now being moved to the eastern side of the dual carriageway, while widening work on the western side (adjacent to Victoria Park) begins.
Traffic had been restricted to a single lane in both directions for almost two weeks while the central reservation was removed.
West Berkshire Council says there will be no need for further temporary lane closures until later in the project, allowing traffic to flow more smoothly.
However, vehicles over 6 ft 6in (two metres) in width will not be allowed to use the offside (right hand) lane in either direction, at any time.
Drivers are being urged to take extra care when driving through the roadworks and to avoid changing lanes.
The improvement works will see the construction of a new traffic signal-controlled junction and an access road into Fleming Road on the London Road Industrial Estate.
