A34 closed in both directions after accident two separate incidents near Newbury

Two people have suffered serious injuries

The A34 is now closed in both directions between the A343 and the A303 following two collisions near Tot Hill - one on each carriageway.

A spokesman from the South Central Ambulance Service said: "We received multiple calls around 07.15 to a serious RTC on the A34 southbound just passed the Tothill services involving a lorry and a van, along with a serious collision almost at the same location northbound involving two lorries.

"On the southbound collision (between a lorry and a van) we took two patients, one with serious injuries, to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

"On the northbound collision (between two lorries) we took one patient with serious and life-changing injuries to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

"Across both incidents, we deployed four ambulances, two paramedic team leaders in rapid response vehicles, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance emergency response vehicle and our full Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

"A lorry has reportedly jack-knifed on the road. One person has been taken to John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford with serious and life-changing injuries."

Emergency services are on site and there are five-mile tailbacks in both directions with a full closure on the A34 NB at Bullington Cross and SB at the A343.

One lane one of the NB carriageway has been gritted and emergency services are starting to release traffic stuck in the tailbacks safely.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: "If you are stuck in the traffic as a result of this please stay in your vehicles and keep as warm as possible - we are on scene and working hard to try and ease the congestion as soon as it is safe to do so."
