A34 near Newbury northbound to close overnight for repairs following collision
The Highways Agency (HA) has confirmed one northbound lane of the A34 near Speen remains closed this afternoon (Thurs), following the collision at around 7am, involving a lorry, van and Kia car and following which the lorry caught fire.
Traffic is queueing from junction 13 (Chieveley) exit slip road of the M4, to the Tot Hill services, with diversions in place via the A339 through Newbury.
There are currently delays of approximately 60 minutes northbound on the A34 and no delays southbound.
The collision resulted in damage to some 50m of the A34 carriageway across all lanes, with lane two northbound most affected. This lane will remain closed throughout the rest of the today (Thursday).
The repairs and resurfacing will then be carried out overnight, between 10pm until 6am tonight (Thursday/Friday).
The A34 northbound will be closed from Tot Hill services, with traffic being diverted from the services onto the B4640 through Newbury town centre, rejoining the A34 before Chieveley.
Three local fire stations, including Newbury, Tilehust and Hungerford, sent pumps to the scene at 6.38am this morning, the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) confirmed, with no-one trapped. The blaze was extinguished by four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.
South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) confirmed one person was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading and a second person to the West Berkshire Community Hospital after the collision, to which ambulance services were called at 6.49am.
Drivers are advised to check conditions before they set out, and plan their journeys to avoid the area if possible.
