Thames Valley Police and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of a car fire on the A34 northbound near Chieveley at around 11.30pm yesterday.

A full closure of the northbound carriageway was implemented as firefighters fought to control the blaze.

At around 12.30am, the fire had been brought under control and traffic was released on the southbound carriageway.

By 2am, all traffic caught within the northbound closure had been released past the scene in lane two after emergency services left the scene.

But the intense heat of the fire caused to car to melt to the carriageway.

Removal of the car was completed but emergency repairs and closure of the road is expected to last until 4pm today.

Road users are advised to follow the 'Solid Diamond' diversion symbol on road signs.
