Actors training ground

The cast and creative team of The Miser, which opens at The Watermill on Thursday night, consists largely of young professionals keen to learn more about their craft. They are part of the Bagnor theatre’s new project Freewheel, which supports emerging artists and encourages them to approach the production in a spirit of exploration. A longer rehearsal period has allowed for additional teaching and training under director Nancy Meckler – who for 22 years ran the renowned pioneering theatre company Shared Experience.
The wealthy Harpagon wants his daughter to marry a rich old man, while she wants to marry the penniless young Valere. Harpagon wishes to marry the impoverished young Mariane, the woman loved by his son, but soon discovers to his surprise that not everyone is driven by the love of money. Martin Sherman’s adaptation of Molière’s 17 century satirical farce is fast-paced and encompasses commedia and clowning.
