Advice on hand for customers
West Berkshire Citizens Advice Bureau and West Berkshire Council’s Trading Standards Service have teamed-up to offer guidance to customers.
West Berkshire Council’s executive councillor for public protection, Hilary Cole (Con, Chieveley), said: “This is a difficult time for the high street.
“It can also be a confusing time for consumers. We are working in partnership with the local Citizens Advice Bureau to ensure consumers have the information they need to best protect their interests.”
Last week, three familiar high street chains all entered administration.
Jessops has since closed all its UK stores while HMV and Blockbuster continue to trade.
In Newbury, shoppers were angered to learn that HMV was no longer accepting gift cards.
Janet Langham, aged 53, said: “I’m annoyed because my family were given gift cards for Christmas. We just went to spend them and were told they aren’t being accepted.”
Money used to purchase gift vouchers with credit and debit cards can be claimed back from the card company provided at least part of more than £100 was spent. However claims must be made within 120 days of buying the vouchers.
Some retailers may not be able to return unwanted gifts or return faulty goods but customers are advised to contact the administrators.
